Alrick P. Hammar, Jr. Obituary

Alrick P. “Rick” Hammar, Jr.

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, in-law, godfather, and uncle;

Alrick P. “Rick” Hammar, Jr, 70, formerly of Pelham but now of Rumney, New Hampshire, passed away on Tuesday August 22, 2023, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital in Lebanon, NH after a brief illness.
He was the loving husband for 48 years of Brenda S. (Howe) Hammar of Rumney, NH, who survives him.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on February 9, 1953, the son of the late Alrick P. Sr. and the late Mary E. (Milinazzo) Hammar, he was a graduate of Alvirne High School in the class of 1971.
A second-generation artist and sign painter, Rick and his wife Brenda founded Hammar’s Art Studios in 1976, which they later merged with Hammar and Son’s to create: Hammar and Sons Sign Company and Art Center. Alrick was the President of Hammar and Sons Sign Company until the business was sold in 2011.
As busy as Rick was with Hammar and Sons, he always made the time to give back to the community. He was a Board member of the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce, a founding member of the Pelham Taxpayers Association, and board member of the Hudson Chamber of Commerce. Rick was also a founding member and former chairman of the Pelham Economic Development Committee, and served on the Business advisory panel to Granite State Electric. Rick served on Pelham’s 250th Committee and coordinated the brick sidewalk in front of the Historical Society building. He also donated signs to the church for fundraisers and fish fries, and for many years he worked the Victor Spaulding Auction at Old Home Day.

More than anything, Rick loved his family. He was proud of his children’s accomplishments, and more importantly the kind and loving people that they’ve become.  He also enjoyed his role as “Papa” to his Grandchildren Anthony, Colton, Reagan and Arianna.  He always looked forward to their “stays” and would spend time teaching them about building/woodworking, fishing and nature.  He was a kind and patient teacher, willing to share his knowledge with anyone who asked. Throughout his art career he was an esteemed mentor, sharing his passion and wisdom to many.  He was also a fantastic big brother, always willing to help his siblings when needed.
Rick was an avid outdoorsman. He loved the glory of nature and referred to the woods and mountains as “God’s country.” He loved to hunt and was especially proud of his record, Pope and Young deer. He began hunting as a young man joining his dad Al Hammar, Bob Hammar and Cousin Ray Parkhurst. As an adult, every fall he would hunt with brother-in-law Pete Farinha and friends; Dan, Mike, Ray, Bill, Tom and Al. He also loved to fish in the lakes and rivers of New Hampshire most often with his friends Nick, Al, and Jack.
If you ever asked Rick about the location of a NH town, he’d be certain to tell you not only what it was near, how to get to it, and all the signs he had made along the way. Then he would share a story about hunting and fishing there. Sometimes it was about carrying a canoe to a landlocked pond or losing a favorite fishing lure!
Even through the physical challenges Rick faced for the past ten years, he always rose above it and never lost his drive to live his life to the fullest! Rick will be missed by many, and never forgotten.
Besides his wife, Rick is survived by a daughter: Brianna (Hammar) Rolfs and her husband Eric and their children Anthony, Reagan, Arianna, and Colton Rolfs of Pelham, NH; a son Alrick L. “Lee” Hammar and his wife Tanja of Hollis, NH; three brothers; one sister; two brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; a Godson Daniel O’Rourke; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
