Robert C. Boardman, Sr.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle;
Robert C. “Gus” Boardman, 90, of Salem, New Hampshire passed away peacefully with family at his side on August 1, 2022 at Parkland Medical Center in Derry, NH.
He was the loving husband of Sally R. Boardman who passed away on May 24, 2022. Sally and Gus started dating their senior year at Middlebury College, were married December 19, 1954 and were inseparable for over 67 years of marriage. They moved to Salem, NH after living in Somers, Ct for 51 years (1969-2020).
Born on April 18, 1932 in Hanover, NH, the son of the late Dr. John J. Boardman and the late Pearle (Cameron) Boardman and predeceased by his brother John J. Boardman, Jr, Gus graduated from Hanover High School in 1950 and Middlebury College in 1954 with a BA in Political Science. He also earned his Masters in Hospital Administration from the University of Michigan.
Gus proudly served in the United States Marine Corp and started his career in hospital administration at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Ma. In 1969 the family moved to Somers, Ct where he served in many roles in his professional career including: CEO of Johnson Memorial Hospital, CEO of Rockville General Hospital, President of the New England Hospital Association, Board of Directors/Chairman of Ct Healthcare Workers Compensation Trust, President of the Capital Area Health Consortium, Board of Directors/Chairman of Ct Hospital Association, and Board of Directors Tolland Savings Bank. He never talked about these titles, what he was most proud of were the strong friendships he developed over the years with Middlebury people, heads of his departments in the hospitals he managed, and his Hanover High friends that he skied with until his early eighties.
To those who knew him best he was a loving devoted family man and father, a relentless joker, a loyal friend, and very involved in youth sports particularly football and baseball. He was President of the Waban Little League, coached many different teams and umpired countless baseball games. He was a NH kid at heart as he loved the outdoors and had a life-long passion for skiing. For decades he led the charge in organizing a group to travel to Mt Washington to hike and ski the Tuckerman Ravine Headwall; the last time he did it he was well into his seventies, skiing the Ravine with his grandchildren. Sally and Gus both enjoyed world travelling, tennis, of course skiing particularly out west, and their beach house on the Cape.
Gus is survived by sons Robert Boardman, Jr and his wife Ellen of Norfolk, Ma and their three children, Rachel Boardman of Brooklyn, NY, Samantha Boardman of Boston, Ma, and Cameron Boardman of Boston, Ma; Jeffrey Boardman and his wife Susan of Pelham, NH and their three children, Lauren Boardman of Portland, Me, Michael Boardman of Portland, Me and David Boardman of Boston, Ma; sister-in-law Nancy Hulsen of Summerville, SC; 9 nieces and 1 nephew.
